Summer Classes

EXPERIENCE SYCAMORE STRINGS ACADEMY THIS SUMMER!

SSA is offering a variety of music classes besides our regular instruction classes in violin, viola, cello, bass, and guitar. All interested students and adults in the region are welcome to experience Sycamore Strings Academy! If you are new to SSA or already a student with us makes no difference.

We are presenting nine classes during six weeks from June 22 – August 2. Two of our featured classes are organized in association with

Class Descriptions

1.) Summer Youth Orchestra – Sponsored by the Livermore-Amador Symphony

Conductors: Goran Berg, SSA Director, and Bob Williams, Livermore-Amador Symphony Assistant Conductor. Participants will be mentored by musicians from the Livermore-Amador Symphony. Open for all students, strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, ages 13 – 21. Exceptions for younger ages will be considered.

Tuesdays 6/16 – 7/28, at 7 – 9:30p.m
Conclusion with a concert on Sat. Aug. 1, 8:00pm

Select students will also have opportunity to perform at the Bankhead Theater in collaboration with Valley Dance Theatre on Sat. July 11.

2. Carnival of the Animals

A delightful Music & Movement Class for children ages 3 – 5 and a parent * Child & Parent (The class is only for enrolled children, except siblings under the age of 10 months.) * Weekly 45 minute class in small group * 10:30am or 3:30pm on Tuesdays 6/23 – 7/28: Six classes.

The theme is Animals at the Zoo, based on the musical story “Carnival of the Animals” by Camille Saint-Saens. We will sing, dance, move, listen, play instruments and learn about some orchestra instruments. Tution includes weekly activity sheets.

3. Beginning String Bass

Have you been curious about this big instrument? It is big but not too hard! Students who already play another instrument are welcome to try it out! As well as brand new beginners! Ages 11 – 18 * Weekly 30 minute class in group * 6:00 – 6:30pm on Tuesdays, 6/23 – 7/28: Six classes

4. Jazz Improvisation for String Players I

Ages 8 – 10, equivalent with Suzuki book 2 to 4 levels * Weekly 30 minute class in group * 6:00 – 6:30pm on Wednesdays, 6/24 – 7/29: Six classes

5. Jazz Improvisation for String Players II

Ages 11 and up, equivalent with Suzuki book 5 level and up * Weekly 45 minute class in group * 6:00 – 6:45pm on Thursdays, 6/25 – 7/30: Six classes

Tuition: $145 plus non-refundable $10 registration fee

6. Beginning Guitar for Children, Ages 8 – 12

Weekly 40 minute class in group * 11:00am or 4:30pm on Wednesdays, 6/24 – 7/29: Six classes

For children both with prior experience on other instruments as well as brand new beginners! Depending on enrollment, more times will be available.

7. Beginning Guitar for Parents & Students age 13 and up

You will learn guitar basics in general, easy chords to strum while singing along well-known songs. Recommended for parents of Suzuki violin book 1 students to learn guitar accompaniments to the book songs

Weekly 40 minute class in group * Wednesdays at 6:45pm, 6/24 – 7/29: Six classes. Depending on enrollment, more times will be available.

8. Introduction to Acting – Workshop

We are so happy being able to present this unique class! You will do theater games and improvisation with a small performance at the end of the workshop.

Ages 6-12 * Twice per week 60 minute classes in group * Monday & Wednesday 10-11am, 6/22- 7/16 * NOTICE: TWO CLASSES/WEEK FOR FOUR WEEKS, A TOTAL OF EIGHT CLASSES.

9. Summer Suzuki Workshop (With the Crowden Music Center)

Ages 3 – 18 * 7/30 – 8/2 * Thursday – Saturday: 9am – 5pm * Sunday: 9am – 2pm

Half Day option 9am – 12pm (for Pre-Twinkle to early Book 1 students only)

Tuition: $355 (full day) / $235 (half day) plus non-refundable $15 registration fee

Location: Crowden Music Center campus, 1475 Rose St, Berkeley

Renowned guest faculty from Suzuki programs throughout the nation come together at Crowden to share their expertise with young musicians in an intensive and fun immersion experience. Intended for students from the whole state of California and beyond. You need to already be studying violin, viola, or cello with a Suzuki teacher, but even very young beginners on a “Pre-Twinkle” level are welcome !The workshop provides a variety of classes. Besides instrumental instruction classes in group and master class there will be Music & Movement and Klezmer Fiddling. All students must be supervised by a parent, guardian, or adult childcare provider throughout the day. Goran Berg, workshop director, KC Still workshop coordinator.

SSA POLICIES

Registration & Payment

Download the SSA Summer 2009 Registration Form. Complete and submit the registration form along with full payment, on or before registration deadline, June 5. Only forms accompanied by either full payment of tuition and fees will be processed. Enrollment can only be confirmed when payment is received.

Refunds & Class Cancellations

Students who provide written notice of withdrawal to the SSA office will receive a refund according to the following schedule:

  1. Before the registration deadline, 6/5, students will receive a full refund less the $10 registration fee
  2. After registration deadline, 6/5, and before the start date of the class, students will receive a refund less the $10 registration fee and the prorated cost of the first class
  3. No refunds will be made after the start of the class.

All SSA classes offered are subject to minimum enrollment requirements. Classes may be cancelled at the discretion of the SSA Director if enrollment is deemed insufficient by the registration deadline. Students enrolled in a class cancelled by SSA will receive a full refund.
